The first thing you need to consider is the anchor text of the inbound links to your website. Google in particular but all the major search engines out there use the anchor text as a way to learn about your site. They use the link anchor text to get a feel for what your website is all about and in the next step decide what the site should rank high for. What you need to do next is pick out those golden keywords and make sure they are used for your inbound anchor text. Email the websites that have your link up and make sure they update how the link is shown on their pages so it includes your keywords. And also make sure that in all future link building you know which keywords you want to target.
Which keywords to use is something I’ll write about in another article.
The second factor that determines your ranking is the use of your title tag. More specifically how well you use your keywords in it. This refers to both your site and sites linking to yours. This is why it is so important to stay inside your niche and make sure the pages that link to you are relevant to your business. Relevance is a keyword when it comes to “link juice”. The higher quality inbound links the more it will help your website rank well. Make sure your website includes the most important keywords but be careful not to saturate your title tag to much. Keeping it short gives it greater importance and weight.
Third you have link popularity. This phrase is somewhat vague but what SEO professionals generally talk about when they mean link popularity is Page Rank (or Google PR). PR is determined by a range of factors, the largest being how many sites have a link pointed at you. The more PR a inbound link has, the higher PR or link popularity you’ll get. So to sum up, build links from sites that have a high Google Page Rank but also make sure the links are releveant within your field.
Fourth factor I’ll mention is the number of link domains. This is probably obvious to most of you but if you have 100 links coming from the same domain they are not worth nearly as much as 100 inbound links coming from 100 unrelated unique sites (with similar keywords).
Even though all links give you abit of action you should be focusing on getting your keyword optimized links across a wide range of domains in your field.
The last factor is the use of keywords on the domain. Even though subdomains give you abit of action you’ll see alot better results with keyword usage on the root domain level (www.examplekeywords.com). But like I said examplekeywords.domain.com will also provide limited results.
There are ways to outrank sites that have good keyword density in their domain names but you’ll need alot of experience, SEO know how and patience.
